One of the Nation's Early Career Academy Charter
Schools Opens Saturday in Indianapolis
Students May Jump Start Careers with an Associate Degree

Indianapolis (June 17, 2014) A new career-based charter school for high school students formally opens on Saturday, June 21, at the Northside campus of ITT Technical Institute. The Early Career Academy, one of three in the nation, will start with its first class in August.

The new public charter school will offer high school students the opportunity to graduate with an associate degree in one of two professional tracks that are in demand for Indiana employers network systems administration and electrical engineering technology.

"Our focus will be on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) as we seek to prepare young adults for a career," said George McDermott, executive director of the Indianapolis Early Career Academy. "Students will be provided with laptops and eBooks at no additional cost."

ITT Technical Institute also is a member of the Indiana Works Council, which was tasked by Gov. Mike Pence with evaluating the state's secondary education job training programs to better align with current and future needs of business.

"Taking innovative steps like the Early Career Academy and adding new career-based options for high school students should be a step in the right direction toward aligning career and technical education to the state's workforce needs," said Nicole Elam, vice president of government relations and external affairs. Elam also serves on a regional Indiana Works Council group.

High school juniors can enroll at no tuition cost to their families and earn an associate degree from ITT Technical Institute two years sooner than their peers. As many as 120 students will be part of the first class in Indianapolis that starts on Monday, Aug. 18.

For 45 years, the ITT Technical Institutes have worked with employers to provide career-based programs of study that offer students skills and knowledge that employers are seeking in today's workforce.

Early Career Academy charter schools also are opening this fall at ITT Technical Institute campuses in Troy, Mich., and Tampa, Fla.

The Indianapolis Early Career Academy is inviting the public to attend its open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 21, at the ITT Technical Institute campus at 9511 Angola Court, Indianapolis.
